The Daily Scoop: Speaker Boehner; Letting Payroll Tax Cuts to Expire May Hurt Economy

Today, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) was asked during a briefing whether he believes that allowing the payroll tax cut to expire would hurt the economy. He simply replied, “I’m not an economist”.
Later, Boehner came around to admit that an extension would help boost the economy. To help Boehner out, several actual economists have said that letting the cut expire would, in fact, hurt growth and destroy jobs.

  1. The GOP (or a large share of it) voted against their own version right? A break for the holder of the jobs as opposed the vaunted job creators is no good I guess.

    • I think you’re right, Bruce, they did. And it makes one question their true motivations when they are demanding a method of paying for, what are essentially, middle class tax cuts but have yet to make the same demands of the “job creator” cuts for the wealthiest individuals.

  2. I get and agree that taxes may have negative incentive effects on work and economic activity. But the GOP at this point among other parts of ideology seems to see the the highest income americans as as victims that need reparations for years of abuse under libruhul rule. At least so it seems to me.
